The city of Shanghai’s name relates to the two Chinese characters that it is comprised of, Shang/zan mean upon and hai/hae mean sea, the combined meaning is “Upon the Sea”.
Shanghai is a global financial hub and China’s largest city, located on China’s central coast. At it’s centre is the Bund, a famous waterfront esplanade bordered by colonial era buildings. Over the Huangpu River, the Pudong district’s modern, space age skyline features the Shanghai Tower and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower with its extraordinary pink spheres. It is 468 metres (1535 feet) tall from its base, including its antenna. The tower boasts a total of 11 spheres both small and large. It has a 15 observatory levels. The highest level is the space module at 351 metres (1148 feet), the lower levels are 263 metres (863 feet) and 90 metres (295 feet) and the revolving restaurant is located at 267 metres (876 feet) high. There are also exhibition facilities and a small shopping centre inside along with a 20 room hotel, titled the Space Hotel located between the two large spheres.
Nanjing Road is the most prominent commercial street in Shanghai, the eastern part of Nanjing Road features the main shopping streets of Shanghai. Nanjing Road is thought to be the world’s largest shopping district stretching about 6 kilometres long and drawing in an estimated 1 million people each day. Traditional and authentic food stores are abundant offering local snacks and traditional moon cakes with meat fillings, as well as wontons, desserts and traditional cakes. Tangbao steamed dumplings with tender pork centres, Gansi, shredded tofu in chicken broth, or traditional duck soaked in brine or authentic pan fried beef dumplings which are a taste sensation.
